Hot Distributor The Orchard Takes Worldwide Theatrical And Ancillary Rights to Duplass Brothers Titles
New York, NY – June 22, 2015 – Distribution powerhouse The Orchard announced today that they have closed a deal with Duplass Brothers Productions to take worldwide theatrical and ancillary rights to a slate of upcoming feature films produced by Jay and Mark Duplass.
The slate of films, of which The Orchard has acquired worldwide theatrical, digital rental and sales, cable/satellite VOD, airline, DVD and soundtrack rights, include critically acclaimed SXSW premieres as well as four yet-to-be produced titles. All seven films are a part of the exclusive SVOD Netflix partnership that Duplass Brothers Productions inked in January, which includes a 4-picture deal for the new titles.
The Orchard is also currently distributing Duplass Brothers Productions’ The Overnight (starring Taylor Schilling, Jason Schwartzman and Adam Scott), which hit theaters this past Friday and opened with the number one per screen average at the indie box office.
“We couldn’t have asked for a better working relationship with Jay and Mark on The Overnight — they have been amazing collaborators who share our passion for telling compelling stories, fostering new talent and finding disruptive new ways to reach audiences,” said The Orchard’s SVP of Film & TV Paul Davidson. “Needless to say, we are pumped to expand our partnership with them on this great slate of exciting new films.”
The first film to be released by The Orchard as part of their deal with the Duplass Brothers will be the horror comedy Creep, which hits iTunes exclusively this coming Tuesday, June 23rd. The film stars Mark Duplass and was directed by and co-stars Patrick Brice, his follow-up to The Overnight. Creep was co-produced by Jason Blum at Blumhouse.
The other titles include: Hannah Fidell’s Six Years which stars Taissa Farmiga and Ben Rosenfield as a young couple whose seemingly ideal relationship begins to unravel, sending them down a volatile path; J. Davis’ Manson Family Vacation which stars Jay Duplass as a family man, and Linas Phillips as his estranged brother who’s obsessed with the Manson Family; plus four other upcoming features which Mel Eslyn will produce under the Duplass Brothers Productions banner.
“It’s been a great experience working with The Orchard on The Overnight,” said Jay and Mark Duplass. “They have proven to be an innovative and nimble partner, and we are elated about a continued relationship for years to come.”
The quadruple threat Jay and Mark Duplass burst onto the independent film scene with their first feature, The Puffy Chair, which they wrote, directed, produced, and acted in. Jay and Mark also co-directed such features as Cyrus (starring John C. Reilly and Marissa Tomei) and Jeff Who Lives At Home (starring Jason Segel and Ed Helms). Under their Duplass Brothers Productions banner, they have produced many high profile films, including Colin Trevorrow’s Safety Not Guaranteed (Mark also starred), Charlie McDowell’s The One I Love (Mark also starred), Craig Johnson’s The Skeleton Twins (starring Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig), and Sean Baker’s upcoming Sundance smash Tangerine, hitting theaters this July.
Under their television production arm Duplass Brothers Television in partnership with HBO, they have produced the critical darling “Togetherness” and the upcoming animated series “Animals.”
In addition to The Overnight, The Orchard’s upcoming slate also includes the Sundance Award Winning Cartel Land, director Joe Swanberg’s Digging For Fire, the Kristin Wiig starring Nasty Baby and Louder Than Bombs starring Jesse Eisenberg, Gabriel Bryne and Amy Ryan.
The deal between the Duplass Brothers and The Orchard was negotiated by Jessica Lacy at ICM Partners and Josh Braun Submarine Entertainment with Danielle DiGiacomo from The Orchard. The Duplass Brothers are repped by ICM Partners.
