Critically-Acclaimed Documentary from Producer Nancy Spielberg and Director Roberta Grossman Opens in Theaters Starting This Friday, January 30th
Park City, UT — Tuesday, January 27th, 2015 – The Orchard has acquired all digital and broadcast rights in North America for the acclaimed and award-winning documentary ABOVE AND BEYOND from producer Nancy Spielberg (Chernobyl Heart, Elusive Justice: The Search for Nazi War Criminals) and director Roberta Grossman (Blessed is the Match, Hava Nagila: The Movie).
The news comes amidst a flurry of sales announcements at Sundance and as the film is set to open in theaters nationwide, starting this Friday, January 30th in New York and February 6th in Los Angeles.
“Above and Beyond is a thrilling, unbelievable true story that surfaces the everyday heroes of History who made a true difference,” said Orchard SVP Film & TV Paul Davidson. “We’re excited to be partnering with Nancy and Roberta on bringing it to the digital landscape.”
“I am thrilled to be partnering with The Orchard on Above and Beyond,” said producer Nancy Spielberg. “The team has incredible energy and passion, and a commitment to collaborative work with filmmakers, that will help get the stories of these remarkable men out into the world. They have tremendous reach and they will do an incredible job in enabling Above and Beyond to spread its wings and reach audiences.”
In 1948, just three years after the liberation of Nazi death camps, a ragtag group of skilled American pilots – both Jewish and non-Jewish — answered a call for help. In secret and at great personal risk, they smuggled planes out of the U.S., trained behind the Iron Curtain in Czechoslovakia and flew for Israel in its War of Independence. As members of Machal, “volunteers from abroad,” this band of brothers not only turned the tide of the war; they also embarked on personal journeys of discovery and pride. Above and Beyond is their story.
The deal was negotiated by Danielle DiGiacomo of The Orchard with Marc Bortz of Preferred Content on behalf of the filmmakers.
