Romantic comedy premiered at Tribeca Film Festival in April
Los Angeles, CA, July 13, 2018 – The Orchard announced today that the company has secured North American rights to Song Of Back and Neck, written and directed by first-time filmmaker Paul Lieberstein. The Emmy® award-winning writer, producer and actor, best known for his work on the American version of The Office, stars in the film alongside Rosemarie DeWitt (United States of Tara, Mad Men, La La Land), Brian D’Arcy James (13 Reasons Why, Molly’s Game, Smash), Robert Pine (Jobs, Kaplan’s Korner), Clark Duke (The Office, I’m Dying Up Here, Kick-Ass), and Paul Feig (Freaks and Geeks, Spy, Ghostbusters). Song Of Back and Neck is slated for a 2018 release.
Fred wakes, collapses on the floor in back pain, and continues his day as usual, on the floor. It’s hardly the first time – he’s resigned to a life of pain, having tried every remedy possible and been told by a top surgeon (Paul Feig) that there’s nothing to be done. But he hasn’t yet tried having an affair with a client (Rosemarie DeWitt) at the start of her complicated divorce. He hasn’t yet tried her acupuncturist, whose 200 needles in Fred’s back reveal a bizarre talent. And he hasn’t yet begun to wonder if his problems are more psychological than physical.
“Everybody I know is either close to somebody with chronic back pain or has it themselves, and that creates an ideal setting for a romantic comedy — it’s hard to believe I got here first. I suspect we will soon see hundreds upon hundreds of films set in the world of back pain,” said Paul Lieberstein. “I’m thrilled to be working with The Orchard on this. I’ve been really lucky to find partners in Starstream, Exhibit, and now The Orchard, all committed to taking chances on something different.”
“Never before has one man’s back pain caused as much laughter as Paul Lieberstein’s,” said Producer Jennifer Prediger. “A funny movie about a man getting in touch with his anger could not come at a better time.”
“Song Of Back and Neck is pure Paul Lieberstein, and that’s a compliment,” said Paul Davidson, EVP of Film and TV, The Orchard. “It’s a smart, biting and hilarious film that takes chances in ways that are both fresh and surprising. Isn’t that enough? It was for us.”
Song Of Back and Neck is produced by Lieberstein (Afternoon Nap) and Kim Leadford and Jennifer Prediger of StarStream Media. Executive Producers are Fernando Loureiro, Roberto Vasconcellos (Exhibit), Candice Abela-Mikati (Boo Pictures), Allen Babakhanloo and Lauren Russell.
The deal was negotiated by The Orchard’s Danielle DiGiacomo and CAA Media Finance on behalf of the filmmakers.
The Orchard is also behind the recent release of Bart Layton’s American Animals, one of the year’s strongest independent film debuts, acquired in partnership with MoviePass Ventures. Upcoming releases include the Colombian crime drama Birds Of Passage, directed by Cristina Gallegos and Ciro Guerra; Jeremiah Zagar’s We The Animals, which won the NEXT Innovator Award at this year’s Sundance Film Festival; and Eva Vives’ All About Nina.

The coming-of-age story premiered at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival in April
Los Angeles, CA, July 9, 2018 – The Orchard announced today that the company has secured North American rights to Karen Gillan’s directorial debut The Party’s Just Beginning. Gillan also wrote and stars in the film, which was produced by Gillan’s producing partner Mali Elfman, as well as R. Andru Davies and Claire Mundell. The cast also includes Lee Pace (Guardians of the Galaxy, The Hobbit), Matthew Beard (The Imitation Game), Paul Higgins (Utopia), Siobhan Redmond (Holby City), Jamie Quinn (Bluestone 42), and Rachel Jackson (Two Doors Down). The Party’s Just Beginning is slated for a theatrical release this fall.
Liusaidh (Karen Gillan) is a sharp-witted, foul-mouthed, heavy-drinking twenty-something who is still reeling from a recent loss. Living with her parents in the remote Scottish Highlands, she spends most nights boozing at the local pub and embarks on what she assumes—perhaps rightly—will be yet another short-term fling when she hooks up with an out-of-towner (Lee Pace) who is going through a midlife crisis. At the same time, a wrong number leads Liusaidh to an anonymous connection with an old man grappling with his own end-of-life questions and regrets. These three characters, each at their own crossroads, search for answers—together and independently—in the cold northern landscape, under fleeting glimpses of the Northern Lights.
“Totally and completely thrilled to team up with The Orchard on my directorial debut,” said Karen Gillan. “I greatly admire the films that The Orchard put out into the world and I’m honored to haveThe Party’s Just Beginning be one of them”. “Karen Gillan’s The Party’s Just Beginning establishes her as a unique talent and fresh new voice that absolutely blew us away,” said Paul Davidson, EVP, Film and TV at The Orchard. “It’s a directorial debut anchored by a stellar performance and a compelling screenplay that makes her a true triple threat. We are excited to partner with her on her first feature.
The deal was negotiated between The Orchard’s Danielle DiGiacomo and UTA Independent Film Group on behalf of the filmmakers.

A theatrical release is planned this fall for the SXSW Audience Award Winner
Los Angeles, CA May 18, 2018 – The Orchard announced today that the company has acquired U.S. rights to Josh Lowell and Peter Mortimer’s The Dawn Wall. The adventure-packed documentary produced by Red Bull Media House in association with Sender Films, which Variety called a “must-see experience,” offers a riveting inside look at the historic 3,000 foot climb in Yosemite National Park attempted by American rock climbers Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson in January 2015. A theatrical release is planned for this fall.
In January, 2015, American rock climbers Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson captivated the world with their effort to climb the Dawn Wall, a seemingly impossible 3,000 foot rock face in Yosemite National Park, California. The pair lived on the sheer vertical cliff for weeks, igniting a frenzy of global media attention. But for Tommy Caldwell, the Dawn Wall was much more than just a climb. It was the culmination of a lifetime defined by overcoming obstacles. At the age of 22, the climbing prodigy was taken hostage by rebels in Kyrgyzstan. Shortly after, he lost his index finger in an accident but resolved to come back stronger. When his marriage fell apart, he escaped the pain by fixating on the extraordinary goal of free climbing the Dawn Wall. Blurring the line between dedication and obsession, Caldwell and his partner Jorgeson spend six years meticulously plotting and practicing their route. On the final attempt, with the world watching, Caldwell is faced with a moment of truth. Should he abandon his partner to fulfill his ultimate dream, or risk his own success for the sake of their friendship?
“The Dawn Wall is a truly incredible story,” said Danny Grant, The Orchard’s VP of Sports Acquisitions. “We couldn’t be more thrilled to partner with Red Bull Media House and Sender Films to distribute it.”
“The Dawn Wall showcases Red Bull Media House’s commitment telling excellent stories, and the spirit of dreaming big,” said Jürgen Kinateder, Executive Producer at Red Bull Media House HQ “we are excited to team up with The Orchard to bring this documentary to a broad audience in the US.”
“After seven years of filming and another three years of post-production, we are proud that The Dawn Wall finally releases in theaters,” adds Josh Lowell, Director. “Tommy took us on this wild climbing adventure with his partner Kevin, and their motivation and drive goes deeper than anything we’ve encountered in filmmaking.”
The deal was negotiated by The Orchard’s Danny Grant and CAA Media Finance on behalf of the filmmakers.
