The Orchard Acquires Classic Rock Catalog Shrapnel Label Group

    Nov 19, 2015

A third of the 35-year old label’s releases to be made available digitally for the first time, including music from Paul Gilbert, Vinnie Moore, Tony MacAlpine, Yngwie Malmsteen and more.

New York, NY – November 19, 2015 – The Orchard , a pioneering independent music, film and video distribution company, today announced its acquisition of rock/metal label Shrapnel Records’ historic catalog. Spanning 35 years and representing many groundbreaking artists, Shrapnel Records has maintained a pivotal role at the frontlines of metal history since its launch in 1980 by producer Mike Varney as the first dedicated metal label, predating successors Metal Blade and Megaforce and bringing renowned guitarists including Paul Gilbert, Vinnie Moore, Tony MacAlpine, Richie Kotzen, Yngwie Malmsteen, Jason Becker and Marty Friedman to worldwide attention.

The Orchard will now oversee digital and physical distribution for the label, making Shrapnel’s 3,000-song catalog available for streaming for the first time, including releases by Chris Duarte (Lucky 13), Paul Gilbert (Stone Pushing Uphill Man), and Indigenous (Time Is Coming). In addition, a third of the 322 album titles included in the deal will be made available digitally for the first time.

“The distribution landscape has changed dramatically in the last ten years, requiring greater staffing with expertise in digital distribution,” says Varney. “Although the Shrapnel Label Group will continue making new records, the expanded distribution and accompanying administration of the back catalog was something we felt could be best served by a larger company. As a pioneer in digital distribution with a tremendous track record of more than fifteen years, The Orchard was in a stronger position to effectively realize this for our catalog.”

Varney founded Shrapnel Records at just 22 years old. By then he was already a fixture on the San Francisco scene, having been a member of The Nuns — one of first punk bands in the United States — played guitar in the Rocky Sullivan Band with legendary Quicksilver Messenger Service guitarist, John Cipollina, and co-authored the Rock Opera “Rock Justice” (EMI Records) with Jefferson Starship vocalist, Marty Balin. He began a quest to find the next great American guitar player in the heavy metal genre, discovering many guitarists who would later rank among the best in the world. His popular monthly Guitar Player Magazine column, “Spotlight,” aided his search for new talent and he recruited the cream of the crop for his label, eventually expanding into a label group that included the blues/rock label Blues Bureau International and the jazz/fusion label, Tone Center.

“The Shrapnel Label Group was the first American label dedicated to metal and has pioneered the development of guitar-centric records,” says Jason Pascal, VP of Catalog Development and Associate General Counsel at The Orchard. “To get to work with a catalog of this size and scope is humbling and inspiring, and I couldn’t be happier that The Orchard will now serve as the steward for Shrapnel’s legacy.”

    The Orchard Captures “Ghost Team”

    Nov 11, 2015

Feature comedy starring Jon Heder, David Krumholtz, Melonie Diaz, Paul W. Downs with Justin Long and Amy Sedaris slated for late 2016 release

Los Angeles, CANovember 11, 2015 – The Orchard announced today that the company has acquired North American, U.K., Australian, and New Zealand distribution rights to the Oliver Irving-directed comedy-thriller Ghost Team starring Jon Heder, David Krumholtz, Melonie Diaz, Paul W. Downs with Justin Long and Amy Sedaris. The film, which wrapped production last week and is slated for release at the end of 2016, was written by Peter Warren, and produced by Julie Christeas and Schuyler Weiss of Tandem Pictures, Alex Sagalchik of Mott Street Pictures, Clem McIntosh and director Oliver Irving, with Kevin Iwashina of Preferred Content serving as Executive Producer.

Desperate to escape the monotony of his daily life, paranormal-obsessed Louis (Jon Heder) puts together a dysfunctional team — his depressed best friend, misfit nephew, a cable access “medium” and an overeager security guard—to mount his own investigation into the beyond. What results isn’t just a hilariously terrifying brush with the entities haunting an abandoned farm, but also an exploration of friendship, adventure and the things we all believe in to keep going. Everyone’s hunting for something.

“When you pair a script this hilarious with a cast this funny, and bring talent like Oliver Irving to the table, it’s really a no-brainer for us,” said Paul Davidson, The Orchard’s SVP of Film and TV. “We’re thrilled to be involved with Ghost Team at this early stage and bring it to audiences next year.”

Ghost Team is very much a passion project for me and my collaborators,” says Ghost Team director Oliver Irving. “It’s clear the team at The Orchard is just as excited about the film, and it’s wonderful to know we have such an enthusiastic and supportive partner when bringing the film to comedy and horror fans alike.”

Ghost Team is the latest film acquisition for The Orchard. The company recently announced acquisitions of the critically acclaimed horror film Demon and the TIFF audience favorite Southbound. Recent releases from The Orchard include Nasty Baby, The Overnight, Digging for Fire, Finders Keepers and this awards season contender Cartel Land.

The deal was negotiated by Danielle DiGiacomo, The Orchard’s Director of Acquisitions, with Marc Bortz of Preferred Content and Marc Simon of Cowan Debaets Abrahams and Sheppard LLP on behalf of the filmmakers.

For more information and updates on Ghost Team visit the project on Facebook and follow the project on Instagram and Twitter at @ghostteammovie.

The Orchard Lands Toronto International Film Festival’s “Demon”

    Nov 04, 2015

Los Angeles, CA – November 4, 2015 – The Orchard announced today that the company has acquired the North American distribution rights to Demon, from the late director Marcin Wrona. The film, which The Orchard will release in 2016, had its world premiere at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival (Vanguard Section). It was directed, produced and co-written by Wrona with Pawel Maslona co-writing and Olga Szymanska serving as executive producer.

In Demon, a young man travels to the hometown of his future wife where he knows no one. As a wedding gift from the bride’s grandfather, he receives a piece of land where the two can build a house and raise a happy family. While preparing the land to build, he finds human bones buried beneath the new property. Strange things begin to happen to change this happy couple’s life forever. Demon is a modern take on one of the most famous figures of Jewish folklore, the dybbuk, a spirit of a person not properly laid to rest that seeks to inhabit the body of a living person.

“I am thrilled to be working with an exciting and innovative company like The Orchard to bring our film to US audiences,” said Szymanska. “I know Marcin would have been so pleased to find a company as passionate and enthusiastic about this film as he was.”

Demon is its own unique monster of sorts – moody and creepy, yet with an underlying satirical side that resonated with us,” said Paul Davidson, The Orchard’s SVP, Film and TV. “Marcin delivered a wonderfully original film and we hope to honor his memory with its release.”

Demon is the latest acquisition in what’s been a fruitful year for The Orchard. Last month, the company acquired another hot 2015 Toronto International Film Festival title, the horror anthology Southbound which will be released next year. Recent releases from The Orchard include Nasty BabyThe OvernightDigging for FireFinders Keepers and 2015 Sundance Film Festival winner Cartel Land.

The deal for Demon was negotiated by Danielle DiGiacomo, Director of Acquisitions for The Orchard, with ICM Partners on behalf of the filmmakers. Reel Suspects is currently selling the film at AFM.

The Orchard and Nitro Circus Join Forces Under the Big Top With New Distribution Partnership

    Oct 20, 2015

Nitro Circus films old and new will be available digitally through The Orchard.

New York, NY & Los Angeles, CA – October 20th, 2015 – Film/TV distributor and top-ranked multi-channel network, The Orchard, announced today a distribution deal with Nitro Circus, the action sports entertainment collective led by 17-time X-Games medalist Travis Pastrana. Through the deal, The Orchard now has worldwide distribution rights to Nitro Circus’ eight-film back catalog and three upcoming releases. This is the sixth extreme sports catalog licensing agreement for The Orchard, following deals with Red Bull Media HouseBrain FarmFanclub Media and others, making it a distinct market leader in the action sports genre.

“Nitro Circus is excited to launch our relationship with The Orchard with an epic first release: Action Figures,” says Michael Porra, Nitro Circus’ CEO and Creative Director. “This is Travis’ directorial debut and a one-of-a-kind film that is sure to take the world of action sports by storm. Nitro Circus produces the most engaging action sports media in the world and this partnership will ensure the next evolution of Nitro Circus content is made available to consumers globally.”

Nitro Circus was born when motorsports superstar Travis Pastrana and friends Jeremy Rawle and Gregg Godfrey began producing their stunt-filled DVD series in 2003, which eventually evolved into one of MTV’s biggest reality TV shows, “Travis and The Nitro Circus.” By 2010, the company took their show on the road and created Nitro Circus Live, the ongoing tour that follows motocross riders around the globe.

Now, Nitro Circus’ entire eight-film catalog will be in available digitally and on VOD for the first time under one roof, kicking things off with the release of Action Figures. The film, out today, October 20th, is a first of its kind: every action sports athlete involved, from Josh Sheehan and Jolene Van Vugt to James Foster, Thomas Pagès and director Travis Pastrana was part of the editing process. Over 20 “world’s first” tricks are featured in the movie, which was written, directed and produced by Pastrana in conjunction with Nitro Circus.

“We’re very excited to partner with Nitro Circus,” says Jim Martin, The Orchard’s Director of Sports, Film & TV. “Travis Pastrana and Nitro Circus produce some of the most thrilling material on the market today. They push skill and risk to all new levels with every stunt captured on film. We’re huge fans of their work and can’t wait to share their epic new film, Action Figures.”

“This is a really special film franchise to be partnered with,” says The Orchard’s VP of Sports, Danny Grant. “It’s an honor to be working with the Nitro Circus crew and bringing their immense entertainment catalog to the worldwide digital marketplace. Fans are going to love it, and that’s a pretty cool feeling.”

    ABOUT NITRO CIRCUS

Recently named by Forbes magazine as one of America’s Most Promising Companies, Nitro Circus continues to position itself as the leading youth action sports & entertainment brand on the planet.  From humble beginnings in 2003 — Jeremy Rawle, Gregg Godfrey and extreme sports superstar Travis Pastrana producing DVDs from a Utah garage — to a smash TV series which has aired in over 60 countries, Nitro Circus has exploded to global popularity. In 2012, Nitro Circus: The Movie, featuring cast members from the hit television series, was released in cinemas worldwide. In 2015, Nitro Circus announced a partnership with NBC Sports Ventures.  The multi-year strategic alliance will feature TV specials airing nationally in the U.S. on NBC and NBCSN as well as streamed on NBC Sports Live Extra, plus a new reality series, “Nitro Circus: Crazy Train,” debuting on NBCSN in October 2015.

The TV show was transformed by current CEO and action sports industry guru Michael Porra into a must-see live event in 2010, creating the global touring phenomenon that is Nitro Circus Live. Since its inaugural Australian trek five years ago, the show has travelled the globe, obliterating box office records and cultivating a legion of diehard fans.  Nitro Circus has now rolled across five continents, blown away over two million fans and sold-out shows in Europe, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan, the Middle East and South Africa.  With close to 100 shows globally set for 2015 and a packed 2016 touring schedule visiting even more cities still to be announced, Nitro Circus is the world’s most successful action sports touring brand.

The Orchard Partners with Singer/Actress Rose McGowan to Release Cutting-Edge Debut

    Oct 20, 2015

World’s largest independent distributor continues to support innovative talent in worldwide distribution deal.

New York, NYOctober 20th, 2015 – The Orchard , a pioneering independent music, film and video distribution company, announced today a new partnership with singer/actress Rose McGowan. The former Charmed actress is diving into the music scene with her first single, “RM486,” exclusively distributed by The Orchard. The creative and highly controversial song and video illustrate The Orchard’s ongoing support of forward-thinking artists.

“With the release of my first single, ‘RM486,’ I wanted to do it my way,” says McGowan. “I knew I wanted to distribute the song digitally and needed someone who not only knew their stuff, but was smart about it. A friend suggested The Orchard, and little did I know they’ve been in digital distribution since it began. ‘RM486’ is one of the first reflections of myself as an artist, unfiltered by anyone or anything else; it’s been gratifying to witness people experience my art worldwide across all platforms instantly. And that’s what The Orchard can do. The power of their reach is awesome.”

The direct deal with McGowan’s label, Damage Inc., finds The Orchard exclusively distributing the singer’s new music worldwide. “RM486” is the first single to be released, along with its artistic and graphic music video. Its reference to abortion pill RU486 and provocative visual interpretation are some of many ways McGowan is using not only music, but also other creative art forms to drive her message.

The video was directed by Grammy and MTV Award-winner Jonas Åkerlund (Lady Gaga, Beyonce, U2) in collaboration with global fashion think tank WHOYOUARE. The actress, known for her outspoken criticism of Hollywood, plans to spread her social messages through art and music, which will be made possible through The Orchard’s distribution platform.

“We love working with passionate and talented artists who know what they want and aren’t shy about challenging the status quo,” says Colleen Theis, COO of The Orchard. “Rose’s strong vision and reach is a perfect match for The Orchard’s skills and sensibilities. We’re honored to have the opportunity to bring her art and voice to the world.”

McGowan has previously partnered with other musical artists, but this is the singer’s debut under her own name. More releases are expected soon through this ongoing partnership.

The Orchard Travels “Southbound,” Picking Up The Latest Film From The Creators of The “V/H/S” Franchise

    Oct 08, 2015

LOS ANGELES, CA — October 7, 2015 — The Orchard announced today that the company is acquiring North American distribution rights to Southbound, the brainchild of the creators of the V/H/S horror series. The distributor plans to release the film in the first half of 2016. Southbound had its world premiere in the Midnight Madness section of the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival and most recently screened at Fantastic Fest in Austin, TX.

“For those of you uninspired ramblers who have been searching for a horror anthology that truly revs your engines,” wrote Matt Donato of We Got This Covered, “Southbound is an inviting attraction along a road lined with many generic places to stop.”

Indeed, Southbound is no ordinary film. It features a unique narrative structure: five haunting tales tied together only by the fact that they all appear to take place in the same general universe. On a desolate stretch of desert highway, weary travelers—two men on the run from their past, a band on their way to the next gig, a man struggling to get home, a brother in search of his long-lost sister and a family on vacation—are forced to confront their worst fears and darkest secrets in these interwoven tales of terror and remorse on the open road.

Producer Brad Miska says, “After seeing such success with V/H/S, we look forward to a repeat performance with Southbound. Working with this group of dedicated and talented directors has proven to be a terrific experience and we are happy that The Orchard will be bringing our film to U.S. Audiences.”

“When we saw Southbound, we knew we were looking into the eyes of a much different animal,” said Paul Davidson, SVP of Film & TV at The Orchard. “Southbound is a slick and stylish film that will have audiences engrossed from the moment the engines kick into gear and we can’t wait to invite audiences to take that journey.”

The Orchard has been making waves in the independent film scene this year, acquiring and releasing a wide range of high-profile titles including, but not limited to, Patrick Brice’s The Overnight starring Taylor Schilling, Adam Scott and Jason Schwartzman; Joe Swanberg-directed Digging for Fire starring Jake Johnson, Brie Larson and Anna Kendrick; and Matthew Heineman’s 2015 Sundance award winning documentary Cartel Land.

The majority of the Southbound team will be familiar to audiences as the creative forces behind the original V/H/S: Producers Brad Miska and Roxanne Benjamin and directors David Bruckner (The Signal, forthcoming Friday the 13th for Paramount) and Radio Silence (Devil’s Due for Fox, forthcoming Untitled Blumhouse project), as well as V/H/S/2 director Jason Eisener serving as Editor for the section “Siren.” Their V/H/S segments were the most highly regarded of the series for their sense of irreverence and fun within the horror genre. They are joined in the director’s seat this time by Patrick Horvath, who followed up his well-regarded debut indie horror film Entrance (IFC) with The Pact 2 (IFC), and producer Roxanne Benjamin (V/H/S 1 & 2, Faults, The Devil’s Candy), making her directorial debut from a script co-written with Susan Burke, known for Sundance drama Smashed (Sony Pictures Classics).

The deal for the film was negotiated by Craig Sussman, Senior Director of Acquisitions at The Orchard, with CAA on behalf of the filmmakers.
