INTRODUCTION

In last week’s Inside The Orchard, we provided an overview of how the increase in royalty rates for Internet radio may limit the number of webcasts and, therefore, the opportunities to discover independent music. On April 19, SoundExchange announced that it has approached commercial and non-commercial webcasting services to explore mutually beneficial business arrangements that help to foster growth of Internet radio and provides fair compensation to creators of music. SoundExchange collects and distributes royalties for digital audio transmission and has publicly supported the Copyright Royalty Board’s decision to increase webcasting rates.
