Artist: Kristin Diable
Track: Sister Sadie
UPC: 803680444054
Label: Speakeasy

Since relocating to NYC
in 2003, this soulful young Louisiana-raised singer-songwriter
"has already established herself as one of New York City's
more promising young artists." [Voice
Of America]
Diable's stripped-down
brand of songwriting has been compared to Lucinda Williams, Neil
Young and Janis Joplin. Managed by George Stein [Jeff Buckley], Diable has kept herself busy, playing residencies

Norah Jones and John
Mayer, in support of her breathtaking new album Shelter.

3/5
[2002, UPC 803680620359 ]
Label: Frenchkiss Records
Genre: Indie Rock
REISSUE |
In 1997, these
art-damaged Brooklyn punks opened their debut album with
a French spoken-word intro that - according
to Pitchfork's
8.5 out of 10 review - translates roughly to: "Les
Savy Fav enjoys good hygiene, sends their love
to you and, in a nutshell, they are the embodiment of
punk f**king rock." Produced by James Murphy [LCD
Soundsystem, DFA], 3/5 was
originally issued in a limited pressing on NYC's Self
Starter Foundation label, with the vinyl wrapped in a
real shower cap [hello, collectors!].
Now reissued and mastered for the first time ever, the
out-of-print debut offers early evidence of "one
of the most important bands the US underground has thrown
up in years" [New
York Times]. Les Savy Fav
will rock the Öya
Festival in Oslo, Norway on August 12. A fall tour
is in the works [dates TBA].

Bireli Lagrene:
A Tribute to Django Reinhardt:
[1999, UPC 803680588857]
Label: Jazzpoint Records
Genre: Jazz
|
| "[Django]
Reinhardt's life held a surfeit of event, anecdote and
music and his story has been told many times, but perhaps
never more meaningfully than through the work of his
true artistic heir, Bireli Lagrene." [BBC
Jazz] French guitarist Lagrene emerged in 1980
as a 13-year-old phenom, playing virtuoso interpretations
of the famed Gypsy guitarist's signature works on Routes
To Django, which sold 100,000 copies. A
Tribute to Django Reinhardt is a 2-CD set of recordings
captured at Carnegie Hall and the Freiburg
Jazz Festival in 1984 and '85. It contains
renditions of Reinhardt compositions like "Djangology," "Nuits
de St. Germain des Près" and "Minor
Swing," plus Lagrene originals and versions of
Charlie Parker's "Ornithology" and
Chick Corea's "Spain."

Django Reinhardt :
Anthology 1934-1937
[2002, UPC 803680205952]
Label: Stardust Records
Genre: Jazz |
Born in 1910,
Jean
Baptiste "Django" Reinhardt was a Basque
Gypsy who became one of the most important European jazz
musicians of all time, despite an accident at age 18 that
partially paralyzed two of the fingers on his fretting
hand. A breathtakingly agile guitarist, Reinhardt is
cited as a major influence by artists as diverse at Chet
Atkins, Jimi Hendrix, Charlie Christian, Tommy Iommi
and Les Paul. In 1934, he formed the Quintet
of the Hot Club of France with Stéphane
Grappelli,
one of the all-time great jazz violinists. Their legacy
is captured on the 20-track Anthology.
These sessions are considered by many to be the finest
example of his work, "a superb place to start
listening to this singular artist." [Allmusic.com]

The Hot Puppies:
Under The Crooked Moon:
[2006, UPC 803680591352]
Label: Fierce Panda
Genre: Indie Rock
Release Date: July 24
|
The debut album
from female-led Welsh band The
Hot Puppies features “tunes
that ooze a seductive danger scent that make you want
to snip locks of mullet off of Nick Cave.” [NME] Artrocker writes, "The
Puppies' eerily magical keyboards, twangy guitars
and haunting/striking vocals [courtesy of equally
striking singer Becki Newman] are living, vibrant
proof that the band are ripe for big-time success.” Building
on momentum from their debut
EP - issued earlier this year - a tour with Art
Brut and comparisons
to Blondie and Rilo Kiley, the Puppies will headline
a UK tour and record live BBC sessions
for Tom Robinson [BBC 6 Music] and Huw Stephens [BBC
Radio 1] this summer. See

Flight Of The Raven
[2006, UPC 803680591253]
Label: Fierce Panda
Genre: Indie Rock
NEW |
Though this guitar-and-drums
duo hails from Oxford,
their sound harkens to Washington D.C. hardcore
and Seattle grunge heydays. Their new album,
produced by Jack
Endino [Nirvana, Mudhoney], contains "enough
double-barrelled riffage, machine-gun drumming and supercharged
vocals to put the fear of God into Coldplay listeners the
world over.” [Kerrang]
NME writes, "guitar-playing Ben and drumming
Ben could even teach Jack and Meg a thing or five about
how much blood ‘n’ spunk noise two people can
make if they put their minds and machine guns to it."
The album closes with a rousing rendition of Black
Flag's "Revenge," featuring vocals
from Queens Of The Stone Age wildman Nick
Oliveri. Catch Winnebago
Deal in the U.K. this summer. See

VIVA ITALIA
Last
Sunday, Italy beat France to
clinch their fourth World
Cup victory

'82.
In a crucial moment, France star Zinedine
Zidane lost his cool and head-butted Italy's Marco
Materazzi in
the chest. Naturally, the Internet had a heyday with
the footage. In tribute to
the Azzurri,
especially during these troubled times,
we've assembled our favorite tracks from Italian artists like Gigi
D'Agostino, Peppino
di Capri, The
Reverse, Gazebo, Piero
Umiliani, Ennio
Morricone, Annalisa
Minetti, Alberto
Camerini and others.
CALIFORNIA GIRLS
Inspired
by Nancy Sinatra's album California
Girl [UPC 803680593059],
which includes tracks like "Do You Know The Way To San Jose?"
"Hooray For Hollywood," "Route 66" and "Hotel California," we've
assembled 15 odes
to the fine women of the Golden State, including music from Neil
Cleary ["Girls Who Leave the East for San Francisco"], Hank
Thompson ["California Women"], The
Hampton String Quartet ["California Girls"], Contrefaçon ["Elle
est, L.A."], Frank
Yankovic and His Yanks ["Rose of Old Monterey"] and
