Artist & Label Relations (ALR) Position

This is a part time position, with potential to end or go full-time after 3 months. 32 hours / week at $12/hour.

Reporting to the Senior Director of Client Services, the ALR Position will act as an intermediary between The Orchard and thousands of distributed music and video labels. Working in a high-volume customer service department, the ALR position processes new products and performs client support, solving issues, and identifying bugs on our website reported by clients. Job functions will include:

  • Coordination and processing of distributed products using our proprietary web interface
  • Answering high volume incoming emails and phone calls from labels
  • Managing large amounts of data about clients, products, and keeping our system updated.
  • Position is customer service focused, requiring excellent internal and external communication skills and professional diplomacy.
  • Customer service experienced required Supreme attention to detail, multi-tasking, and follow-through skills required
  • Heavy web user and heavy MS Office experience required
  • Extreme passion for, knowledge of, and appreciation of all types of music and people strongly preferred
  • Some business experience dealing with labels or media companies preferred.
  • Fluency in Spanish, French, or Italian a plus Position is based in New York.
  • Bachelors Degree required.

Now Seeking Interns in the NYC Area for Summer 2010

An Orchard internship offers students a unique hands-on experience in the exciting and fast-growing field of digital media distribution. We are currently seeking full and part-time interns willing to dedicate 15-40 hours a from May – August 2010. Orchard internships are unpaid. We can provide the necessary documents for applicants looking to earn internship credit through the school they are currently enrolled in.

General Requirements

A genuine love for music, a great attitude, an open mind, an eagerness to learn and a willingness to take initiative, no matter the task.  Experience with Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel is required. Familiarity with digital music market a plus, but not mandatory.

Interactive Marketing:

The Interactive Marketing department focuses on supporting our label clients and their release priorities.  Interns have the opportunity to become knowledgeable in research web stats and social networking activity.  Interns assemble information for newsletters that are sent to writers and programmers; handle promo CD mailings; tracking and compiling screenshots of Orchard music features on websites; have the opportunity to contribute creative ideas for marketing campaigns, draft marketing plans and press releases.  Must be an avid writer and music lover.

Retail Marketing:

Play an integral role in supporting  our clients services by tracking and analyzing promotional placements for The Orchard’s catalog across retail stores.  Interns  build and update structured formats for tracking such promotional placements, and assist in the communication process of placements across marketing and label relations teams. Interns are also responsible for updating The Orchard’s back-end systems with relevant marketing information. They also handle the creation of playlists etc. from The Orchard’s catalog which support promotional opportunities at  our retail partners. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office is essential. Familiarity of Photoshop is a plus.

Corporate Marketing:

Work closely with The Manager of Corporate Marketing & Communications to ensure that The Orchard brand is represented accurately internally to employees and externally to our clients and other figures in media (editors, journalists, analysts) who are interested in our company. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:  updating corporate blog and corporate website, maintaining contact databases, handling social media sites (Twitter, Facebook, MySpace), and tracking editorial coverage.  

Artist/Label Relations:  

Work directly with Artists/Labels in the set-up of their releases and marketing campaigns! This hands-on department is where you’ll truly find out what the music business is all about, working with every department at The Orchard and thousands of artists and labels from across the globe! Process new releases, work with our mainframe computer system, listen to music, gather marketing materials.

Audio and Video Operations:

Assisting with digital archive management of music and video catalog; quality control of assets and meta-data; encoding, processing, and delivery of audio and video to various digital retail outlets; assisting with special data projects. Must have knowledge of various audio and video formatting, encoding and compression technologies (mp3, wma, aac, etc), basic knowledge of windows file and directory structures, Excel and other Microsoft Office applications. Familiarity with ftp and SFTP protocols, and proficiency in Excel/Access a plus, but not necessary. Final Cut Pro experience a plus. 

Licensing and Creative Services:  

Daily duties will include: listening to catalog and tagging with qualitative data; researching label copy from catalog releases; reviewing industry trade publications; drafting approval forms for music buyers and artist/label clients for various media types; and helping to research, assemble and write newsletters that are sent to music supervisors and digital store programmers.  Requirements include basic knowledge of the music publishing landscape; comfort with legal language and a passion for business; strong understanding of music trends and familiarity with music across all genres; good writing skills.  Photoshop, Dreamweaver preferred but neither required.

Content Management:

As an intern in the Content Managerment department, you will be responsible for securing and trafficking audio/video files, metadata, artwork and supplemental marketing materials in accordance with production deadlines. You will assist content managers in overseeing the complete life-cycle of audio/video releases from ingestion to delivery to availability with digital and mobile retailers on release dates, and will help troubleshoot, communicate, and resolve any issues in a timely manner.

Business Development:

The internship will be for twenty hours per week and is an excellent opportunity to learn the inner workings of the burgeoning digital media industry.  The intern will assist in the daily activities of the Business Development department which will include but is not limited to: evaluating new opportunities for growth, various administrative duties, compiling and editing weekly departmental reports, internally coordinating information pass-offs with other departments, and communicating with current and prospective partners.

Physical Distribution:

Assist TVT Distribution CD sales & marketing department in all phases.   Maintain direct contact with retailers, focusing on indie/small chain retail: sales tracking calls in conjunction with new releases and artist tours, updating retail database, in-store promotional mailings and displays for CDs/promo posters; coordinating promo giveaway logistics, assisting with artist in-store appearances/autograph signings, in-concert promotional displays.  Overall intelligence, organizational skills, easy, outgoing personality, pleasant phone manner are the most important skills, knowledge of Excel for tracking sheets a plus.
